Galway, Ireland

1992

Set amongst a landscape of rural development, this new house in County Galway draws inspiration from traditional Irish vernacular buildings but with some modernist influence. The curved top-lit staircase signifies the entrance and window positions seek to conceal the internal layout. The children’s bedrooms are on the ground floor with direct access to a basement playroom and to the garden. A south-facing double-height entrance hall links the ground-floor kitchen/dining space to the first-floor sitting room, which is arranged to overlook Lough Corrib, the largest of the Connemara lakes. A small terrace with a traditional external staircase links the raised sitting room to the garden.
